CometBFT, the continuation of Tendermint Core, is the consensus engine behind most Cosmos SDK chains. Validators chosen by stake propose a block and vote on it in rounds; once validators holding more than two thirds of the voting power have signed, the block is final. There are no forks to wait out.
Stake decides who the validators are and a vote decides each block, so the site files these chains under proof of stake, the family that makes their blocks, and lists them again among the BFT chains, for how their blocks become final. The trade-off runs the other way from proof of work: if more than a third of the voting power goes offline, the chain stops producing blocks instead of splitting. Tendermint Core was forked and renamed CometBFT in 2023.
