Bitcoin Gold (BTG)

Bitcoin Gold ranks #154 of 504 cryptocurrencies. On a list that also counts tokens, memecoins, wrapped coins, staked derivatives and stablecoins it appears at #1075: 921 of the 1074 assets ahead of it are not native coins but tokens or claims. A token is issued on a host blockchain rather than running its own; a claim stands for an asset already counted. Of the 1307 non-native assets CoinSpectrum lists above it by market cap, about 71% are tokens, 22% are claims on other assets and 7% are memecoins.

Twenty criteria, weighted equally. The Cryptocurrency Standards have six sections: sound money qualities (six checks: scarcity, durability, fungibility, divisibility, portability, verifiability), privacy (five checks), scalability (four measures and three features), security (miner pay and seven checks), programmability (token issuance, smart contracts and five checks) and decentralisation (censorship resistance, no central team, who can mint, nodes, holders, premine, fundraising and developer share). Provisional: criteria marked — are not yet measured and are left out of the average. A rating of structure and market depth, not a price forecast or investment advice. The team 'post-mined' 100,000 BTG (about 8,000 blocks at 12.5 BTG) right after the Oct 2017 fork, as a development endowment: 5% team bonus, 60% time-locked over 3 years, 35% for immediate use. 100,000 / 17,513,924 current supply (CoinGecko, 2026-10-23) = 0.57%. All other BTG is either inherited Bitcoin balances (open-mined) or open Equihash mining since the fork.

No sale or venture round. The endowment's 35% 'immediate use' tranche funded development; whether it was sold on the market isn't documented.

No cut. The 100,000 BTG post-mine after the Oct 2017 fork was a one-off allocation (counted as premine); there is no ongoing dev fee, and all block rewards go to miners.

This contradicts the site's current label. The site says 'premine' with basis 'Coins were allocated without being mined… none were sold'. In fact the only allocation is the 100k post-mine (0.6% of supply), and over 99% of BTG was open-mined, either on Bitcoin before the fork or on BTG since. Coin Bureau reported that the post-mine began before the public launch. Sales of the endowment are undocumented.

How CoinSpectrum ranks Bitcoin Gold

Bitcoin Gold is #154 among cryptocurrencies and #1075 in the market ranking, which lists wrapped coins, staked derivatives, stablecoins and tokens alongside them. CoinSpectrum counts an asset once, and counts only cryptocurrencies: assets with their own blockchain and their own consensus. A wrapped coin, a staked derivative or a stablecoin is a claim on something already counted; a token, memecoin or otherwise, runs on another chain's blocks. All of them are listed, each in its own section, and none is added to the total. The 921 places between Bitcoin Gold's two ranks are held by claims and tokens, not by other networks. The methodology sets out the rule and the counting rule argues for it.

The price above is the median of the exchanges the site reads live, checked every minute and cross-checked against a market snapshot (how market data is gathered). The grade is scored on published criteria, each with its source (the method). The site is independent, nothing on it is a paid placement, and its statements are signed (about CoinSpectrum, the manifesto).
